Blue Waters of Brittany

After days upon days of cloudy skies and misty rain, it was so rejuvenating to head to the west and experience a beautiful, sunny drive along the northern coast of France to the region of Brittany. I had heard of Saint Malo before, but I wasn't aware of how incredible this seaside city was until I saw it for myself. It was a stop my mom insisted as she had often dreamed of moving to France, and this area of Brittany was one of the places she'd had her heart set on. And I could definitely see why.

Upon arriving at the beautiful seaside town of Saint Malo and walking up the city wall steps, there was a brief moment where I actually forgot about the blue skies...because LOOK at the blue of those waters! And with my striped, white dress and the stunning beachy views, everything was feeling oh-so-nautical.

Walking along the wall was definitely the highlight of our quick visit to this city. Not only were the sea views just breathtaking, but the actual structure and details of this historic wall were stunning. Even looking back over the city from our raised vantage point gave us some spectacular views.

After a quick bite to eat (featuring the biggest omelet I've ever eaten or seen in my entire life and some delish macaroons), we walked back to the car and made the short drive down to the quaint city of Dinan. Known to be one of the most authentically historic cities in Brittany, Dinan is a beautiful little riverfront city that comes highly recommended by many (including Europe aficionado, Rick Steves, who says that if you can only visit one place in Brittany, make it Dinan!).

If you want to visit a quintessentially charming French town, this should definitely be the one! It had the most beautiful, old buildings with many planters and brightly painted shutters that positively glowed against the historic stone walls. These, of course, made a fun backdrop for some "walking through the city" pictures. The red shutters below were particularly fun with the red lipstick I chose for the day (a very rare lip color for me) and the fun leopard print Mango sunglasses I was sporting to match my laced flats and black & gold handbag.

One of the best parts of Dinan was walking down the scenic and steep Rue Jerzual, an ancient path that leads you down between local homes and businesses to the port of Dinan. This port is where Dinan first began to grow a thousand years ago and still boasts a large aqueduct and many old, local, riverside businesses.

The hidden parks and courtyards made for some beautiful places to rest and take everything in, and the weather was just perfect. It made it perfect sundress and denim jacket weather.

All in all it was a really wonderful day - definitely one of my favorites from France altogether. From the blue seas of Saint Malo to the charming Beauty & The Beast "provincial town" feeling of Dinan, days in Brittany don't get much better than this. Although the chateaus of the Loire Valley do give it a run for its money. Check back for the next post featuring some of these beauties!
